New investment to delivery 191 homes for Aboriginal Victorians.

9 May 2025 - Aboriginal Housing Victoria (AHV) welcomes the Homes Victoria led Big Housing Build funding announcement of $153.4 million towards more homes for Aboriginal Victorians.

As part of the Homes for Aboriginal Victorians round, Homes Victoria has contributed $86.8 million towards 191 new social homes across 64 projects to be delivered by Aboriginal Housing Victoria.

The new homes include a mix of one, two and three-bedroom dwellings in the form of apartments, townhouses, and free-standing houses. Located across both metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria, sites have been strategically selected to ensure proximity to services, transport, education and infrastructure. The variety of housing sizes are designed to meet the diverse needs of the growing Victorian Aboriginal population.

A major milestone in the delivery of culturally safe, appropriate, and affordable housing for Aboriginal people – many of the 64 projects have been delivered in the last twelve months, with the remaining currently under way, and due to welcome residents throughout 2025 and 2026.

Aboriginal Housing Victoria Chairperson, Daphne Yarram, welcomes the strong commitment the Homes for Aboriginal Victorians funding round demonstrates to improving outcomes for community.

Ms Yarram shares, “Housing is the foundation for better lives, from health, education and economic opportunity to connection to Country and culture. These homes will provide that foundation for hundreds of Aboriginal people across the state, supporting families to thrive, Elders to age in place, and young people to build their chosen futures”

“This is an important and tangible step forward in the implementation of Mana-na woorn-tyeen maartakoort, the Victorian Aboriginal Housing and Homelessness Framework, and a clear example of what can be achieved when Aboriginal housing providers and community-controlled organisations, are resourced and trusted to deliver.”

Aboriginal Housing Victoria CEO, and Chair of the Aboriginal Housing and Homelessness Forum, Darren Smith, shares, “This investment comes at a critical time, as the housing crisis continues to deepen, and one in five Aboriginal people in Victoria are experiencing homelessness on any given day.”

“Every home delivered works towards reducing housing stress, preventing homelessness, and supports the growing Aboriginal housing sector.”

“We are proud to be delivering these homes in partnership with Homes Victoria, and we remain committed to scaling this impact through continued collaboration and coordinated action.”
